Local Tours
The Dominican Republic offers an amazing breadth of activities and sights for visitors to enjoy. The country has towering mountains over 3,000 meters high—high enough to get snow from time to time. At the same time it has deserts, tropical rain forests including one of the world’s largest indigenous palm tree forests, beaches, fresh water rivers and many more natural resources. To locate the treasures which are off the beaten path and typically only enjoyed by the native people you will need a local guide.
For a nominal daily fee you can hire a bi-lingual native guide who will help you enjoy some of the true hidden treasures of the Dominican Republic. These guides can either be independent or associated with a more well-known tour operator (suggested) but they all have intimate knowledge of the island, its culture and the little jewels for you to enjoy. There are guides who can help with eco-tourism, horseback riding, snorkeling/scuba diving or any of a number of other diversions.
Another option taken by many visitors to the area is to head into the campo (countryside) with one of the many experienced tour operators here. Stopping at many interesting destinations along the way, the local tour operators can help you truly enjoy the Dominican countryside, tropical plantations and friendly residents of this lovely country. And you get to do it in the comfort and safety of their modern transportation. Bi-lingual guides are always available.
After an exciting day prowling the countryside, visiting the locals and seeing their way of life you will probably be hungry and ready for an excellent meal. The larger tour operators regularly assist clients in visiting the local restaurants as well, some tour operators even own the restaurant, so you can ask the tour guide where is the best place to eat. Many of our guests and even the villa owners enjoy spending the evening in this relaxed atmosphere with superior services provided by the highly skilled staff. Try it, and you will love it!
Ask your concierge for more information on obtaining a local guide, or suggesting a tour operator for a more complete experience. Our concierges will be happy to assist you.
