Twenty-Seven (27) Charcos
Tucked away in the low-lying mountains of the northern mountain range in the Dominican Republic is one of the most magical ecotourism tours of this largely untouched island paradise. The Rio Damajagua cascades through the low lying mountains towards the sea, creating an abundance of gorgeous natural waterfalls. Chief amongst these waterfalls are called the 27 Charcos, a recently discovered ecotourism treasure that is carefully managed and made available to tourists.
Nearby to the rural mountain community of Imbert, located roughly equidistant between Puerto Plata and Luperon but into the mountains, the 27 Charcos are one of our favorite day-long eco-tourist excursions. Not for the faint-of-heart, this is a pretty intense outdoor activity but one you will enjoy talking about for many years to come.
27 Charcos (literally, twenty-seven puddles) refers to the 27 different waterfalls created as the river descends sharply towards the ocean over erosion-resistant rocky outcroppings. Each waterfall creates its own unique plungpool (or ‘puddle’), often many feet deep. These plungpools are more appropriately called ‘pools’ as opposed to ‘puddles’ because many people can swim and play in them easily.
The trained guides will then show you how ascend or descend, depending upon your direction, to the next waterfall. Many of the pools are deep enough to try an amazing swan dive into the plungpool over and over again. To ensure the pristine ecotourism nature of the park, and your own safety, you need to follow the directions of your assigned guides and you must have one accompany you at all times.
Visit the main website of 27 Charcos to read more about this true, natural Dominican treasure. Our concierge will gladly help you organize a private trip or arrange for you to meet with a tour group. Prices are charged “per waterfall” and includes a life jacket, helmet and trained guide (gratuities are appreciated).
